Ms. Thomas talked about the book she edited, Linda Brown, You Are Not Alone: The Brown v. Board of Education Decision, published by Jump at the Sun. The book is a collection of essays, stories, and poems about the landmark 1954 Supreme Court decision declaring that "separate educational facilities are inherently unequal", and thus that the segregation of public schools by race violated the equal protection clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. The book, published to coincide with the fiftieth anniversary of the decision, is intended primarily for young readers, ages 9-12. Following Ms. Thomas’s speech, Ms. Welch, one of the contributors to the book, made brief remarks. Both writers then responded to questions from the audience. At the beginning of the program, Ms. Newman introduced Ms. Lang and Ms. Campbell, each of whom sang several songs. close
