Mr. Oliphant spoke on the presidential campaign of former Senator Paul Tsongas, who was scheduled to make his entrance into the race for the 1992 Democratic presidential nomination later in the week. Mr. Oliphant discussed Sen. Tsongas' image in the media, which was that of a political renegade. Sen. Tsongas acquired the image by running and winning campaigns against the existing Democratic “machines” in Massachusetts, and continues to cultivate the image by contrasting himself from the existing conventional image of the Democratic Party. Mr. Oliphant also said Sen. Tsongas does not have a “strong” political image in the media, which may damage his prospects when contrasted with the position of the Republicans following the Persian Gulf war. During the interview, excerpts from an interview with Sen. Tsongas concerning comparisons between the his own campaign and the candidacy of Gov. Dukakis. close
