Governors held a discussion on how to control the costs of prescription drugs by importing them. The governors and congressman described the problems that citizens have with drug costs and the programs that have been initiated to alleviate them. Then a panel of congressmen discussed the Medicare prescription drug bill and its adverse effects and the prospects of further legislation. Then a panel of experts discussed the drug industry. All of the panelists responded to questions from the governors. Among the topics discussed were the FDA claims of unsafe drugs being imported, measures the FDA and the pharmaceutical industry have taken to control re-importation, comparative costs of drugs in the rest of the world, and the parallel trading of pharmaceuticals in Europe. Mr. Catizone was the only panelist considered to be in opposition to the governors. While expressing support for efforts to solve the cost problem he documented consumer complaints about drugs received from abroad and warned that Internet pharmacies are outside the regulatory systems of Canada and the United States. He advised against bypassing the regulatory system but instead requested aid in coordinating with the Canadian system. close
