Officials announced President Bush’s policy decisions and initiatives about land mines, including an acceleration of efforts to end the humanitarian crisis caused by land mines left behind in former conflict areas around the world. They said the U.S. is committed to eliminating persistent land mines of all types from its arsenal and to manufacturing mines that are detectable, but only by U.S. personnel, noting that over the past decade the U.S. has been the world’s largest contributor to humanitarian mine action. After their remarks they answered reporters' questions.

Mr. Bloomfield is also Special Representative to the President and Secretary of State of mine action. close
