Education Secretary Rod Paige announced further changes in the “No Child Left Behind” Act that would effect teachers who teach multiple subjects. As the result of cooperative efforts to implement a complex law three new areas of flexibility for providing highly qualified teachers have been developed. The rules have been changed for teachers in rural districts, for science teachers, and teachers who are teaching multiple subjects. Assistant Secretary Simon explained details of these programs and the requirements for middle-school and special education teachers as well as the development and implementation of a data collection reporting system for the states. Representative Jim Gibbons (R-NV) and Tracey Bailey also spoke about the processes states used to design their programs. Afterwards, participants responded to questions from the press. close
