Rev. Jackson, “shadow” senator for Washington, DC, discussed the changes that must be made in the U.S. political agenda to solve the problems facing African-American males in society. He called for African-Americans to go on the offensive to counteract prevailing discriminatory trends in American business, education and society. He discussed Chicago mayor Harold Washington’s campaign for mayor as an example of a successful political movement fronted by an African-American. Rev. Jackson differentiated the political center of U.S. society, which he said was concerned only with winning and losing, from the moral center of U.S. society, which is concerned with right and wrong. The political center of society is corrupted by racism, worker exploitation and gender inequality, which mandates a revival of the moral authority the country needs to create equality within society. close
