This was the first part of a five-part series on the effects of the Patriot Act. Each segment began with a brief interview with a journalist, followed by a roundtable discussion of the positive and negative results of the changes made by the act. The focus of this segment was the treatment of terrorism suspects. Mr. Rood gave background on how the Patriot Act is set up, including the definition of terrorism, changes to the free speech rights of suspects of terrorism, and electronic surveillance. Mr. Rosen and Mr. Rivkin then discussed the definition of terrorism, the scope of the Patriot Act, and the treatment of terrorism suspects. They responded to telephone calls, faxes, and electronic mail from viewers. close
