Mr. Brennan spoke about the importance of funding early treatment of illness before introducing Secretary Thompson. The secretary spoke about the importance of eliminating the disparities in health care among minorities, including reducing the occurrence of diabetes, increasing organ donation, the early treatment of disease, and increasing health coverage for children. He reported that efforts to reduce disparities by his department include funding research targeted toward discovering the health differences among minorities, helping low-income seniors through Medicare modernization, improving health literacy, and early detection and treatment of illness. Dr. Gaston presented the Susan LaFlesche Picotte Award for an outstanding contribution to minority women’s health to Universal Sisters, a branch of Speaking of Women’s Health. Ms. Williams accepted the award and spoke about the Universal Sisters health program for African-American women. close
