Author Russell Shorto discussed his book The Island at the Center of the World: The Epic Story of Dutch Manhattan and the Forgotten Colony that Shaped America, published by Doubleday. The book revealed the history behind the Dutch founding of Manhattan three years after the Pilgrims landed at Cape Cod. Russell Shorto explained the Dutch influence on the island, which included tolerance for racial diversity and an instinct for trade. He was joined by Charles Gehring who also discussed the New Netherland Project and the source materials. Then, Mr. Shorto read excerpts from the book. After the prepared remarks, both Mr. Shorto and Mr. Gehring answered questions from members of the audience. close
