A hearing was held to evaluating the Labor Department’s final regulations on overtime pay, the impact on workers and employers, and how these rules would work in practice. Secretary Chao testified on how the new regulations would work and effect specific kinds of employees. She said that more workers would be protected under the new rules by clarifying their status. Dr. Bird talked about the trends in the workforce that make changes in the regulations overdue. Ms. Smith testified that the new regulations would have adverse effects on many workers in low-wage industries. Mr. Fortney testified about the legal problems caused by the out-dated rules. There was controversy over whether the new regulations which were intended to clarify outdated rules would increase or decrease the number of workers protected. close
