Mr. Everest talked about his book, Oil, Power, and Empire: Iraq and the U.S. Global Agenda, published by Common Courage Press. In the book, the author examines the history of American policy toward Iraq and the strategic role of oil in shaping that policy. He argues that the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq was essentially a power grab, intended to further U.S. imperial goals. Mr. Everest claims that control of Iraqi oil reserves gives the U.S. leverage over potential economic rivals, such as China and the European Union. Following prepared remarks, the author responded to questions from the audience. close
