Attorney General Ashcroft testified about the Justice Department’s efforts to combat terrorism and enforcement of the Patriot Act. Much of the hearing also focused on media reports of a memo to the president that reportedly outlined ways in which the torture of terrorist detainees might be used. The attorney general, while not citing executive privilege, refused to share the document with the committee. close
