The Defense Base Closure and Realignment commission continued a series of hearings on the list of U.S. military installation proposed for closure by the Department of Defense. The closings accompany plans by the Department of Defense to decrease the manpower of the U.S. military 25 percent by 1996. Witnesses in the hearing, including legislators and members of the Army Corps of Engineers, testified on the work of the Corps and the financial figures of its operations. Although the Department of Defense announced no plans to substantially reduce the number of personnel or the budget of the Army Corps of Engineers, the Corps developed its own money saving plan to reduce annual expenditures by $112 million. close
