Steven Usdin talked about his book Engineering Communism: How Two Americans Spied for Stalin and Founded the Soviet Silicon Valley, published by Yale University Press. The book documents the lives of Joel Barr and Alfred Sarant. During World War II, these two men stole American weapon information for the Rosenberg spy ring and sent that information to the Soviet Union where it provided the foundation for Soviet technology. When the FBI closed in on Mr. Barr and Mr. Sarant, the KGB helped the two elude capture for years.
Mr. Haynes spoke about how the book told three interrelated stories of the Rosenberg apparatus, the life of the spies in the 1980s within the East Bloc, and their personal lives. Following his comments, Mr. Usdin and Mr. Haynes responded to questions and comments from members of the audience. Mr. Munteanu moderated the event.
John earl Haynes is the co-author of In Denial: Historians, Communism and Espionage, published by Encounter Books. close
