Ms. Shlaes discussed the wage differentials mentioned by Mr. Balzer in his interview and how the Germans had to learn to adapt to West German society. She compared the societies of Japan and Germany since World War II and the importance of the German unification in the global economy. She mentioned that East Germans have always had a culture provided by the state, but without capitalism they have never had the chance to enjoy it. She described the integration of the Army and the final end to travel restrictions throughout East Germany. Mr. Stastny pointed out the former headquarters of the Stasi organization during his tour of Berlin. According to his account, Stasi spies were able to control the country by using over 80,000 citizens to observe the people. Shlaes followed by answering questions about the Stasi and the difficulty of job recruiting in East Germany. close
