The panelists discussed their recent research about terrorism and the impact of terrorism on Euro-American relations.

Mr. Niblett spoke of an increasing awareness in both Europe and the U.S. of the threat of terrorism. He noted a need for a “deeper understanding of what is driving the resilience” of terrorist groups.

Ms. Smith spoke about terrorist recruiting methods in Europe as well as the impact of the war in Iraq and the failure of the Middle East peace process. She discussed European concerns about weapons of mass destruction. She noted that a “broad agreement on the threat of terrorism and the spread of jihadist groups” exists between Europe and the U.S. She claimed that transatlantic differences exist in the understanding of the root causes of terrorism and the most effective means of combating it.

Mr. Simon talked about demographic characteristics of the European Muslim population, as well as its place within European political and economic life. He asserted that demographic factors, in conjunction with political and economic disfranchisement, helped make “Europe the springboard for the September 11th attacks.”

Mr. McNamara spoke about the need for improved dialogue between the U.S. and Europe on the subjects of terrorism and counterterrorism.
