The panelists discussed their recent research about terrorism and the impact of terrorism on Euro-American relations.

Robin Niblett of the Center for Strategic and International Studies spoke of an increasing awareness in both Europe and the U.S. of the threat of terrorism. He noted a need for a “deeper understanding of what is driving the resilience” of terrorist groups.

Julianne Smith of CSIS spoke about terrorist recruiting methods in Europe as well as the impact of the war in Iraq and the failure of the Middle East peace process. She discussed European concerns about weapons of mass destruction. She noted that a “broad agreement on the threat of terrorism and the spread of jihadist groups” exists between Europe and the U.S. She claimed that transatlantic differences exist in the understanding of the root causes of terrorism and the most effective means of combating it.
