The committee heard testimony on a report issued by the General Accounting Office entitled, “Canadian Health Insurance: Lessons for the United States.” The hearing is one of a series being held by the committee to investigate the U.S. health care system. The General Accounting Office compared the U.S. and Canadian health care systems to determine improvements that could be made in the U.S. system, and came up with a list of recommendations to improve the health care system for the U.S., including universal health coverage, a universal payment system, and cost controls on doctors and health services. The committee sought to determine reform measures to improve the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of the U.S. health care system.
