North Korean Foreign Minister Paek Nam Sun spoke about the situation on the Korean peninsula. He talked about threats to peace in the region and the need for North Korea to maintain its security and about the North Korean government’s goal of achieving a united Korean state. He spoke about efforts to improve inter-Korean travel, business, and communication. He asserted that the U.S. has consistently opposed Korean unification, and spoke about the “nuclear issue” between North Korea and the U.S. He claimed that North Korea has “no other option but to possess a nuclear deterrent in the face of the situation in which the present U.S. administration has designated it as part of an axis of evil.” He blamed divisions on the Korean peninsula on U.S. policy, and characterized those divisions as being fostered by foreign interference. close
