Kyle Longley and Clara Ruth Hayman discussed their biographies of two progressive southern senators and answered audience members' questions.

Former Sen. Albert Gore, Sr. (D-TN), father of former Vice President Al Gore, Jr., served as a senator from Tennessee from 1938 until 1970. During his career he broke with other Southern Democrats to support the civil rights act of 1957, but opposed the 1964 act. Beginning in 1965 he opposed the Vietnam War.

Former Sen. Howell Heflin (D-AL) was considered one of the last Franklin D. Roosevelt-style Southern Democrats. He was a highly decorated combat Marine in World War II and served as chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court before going to the Senate. Clara Ruth Hayman is the widow of John Hayman, who died while working on the biography. Mrs. Hayman completed work on the book.

Mr. Longley is the author of "Sen. Al Gore Sr.: Tennessee Maverick". close
