President Bush and El Salvador President Cristiani spoke to reporters during a photo opportunity in their meeting in the White House. President Bush expressed his full support for the El Salvadoran president during the photo opportunity. The El Salvadoran leader’s visit to the United States was primarily to petition President Bush and Congress to continue military aid to El Salvador. Congress withheld $42.5 million in military aid from El Salvador in 1991 pending the outcome of U.N. sponsored peace talks. In remarks on the South Lawn of the White House immediately preceding the departure of President Cristiani, President Bush criticized leftist guerrillas for preventing peace in El Salvador, and lauded President Cristiani for his efforts to end the 10 year old civil war in El Salvador. President Cristiani, in turn, gave thanks to the United States for aiding his country’s efforts toward peace. close
