Mark Kurlansky talked about his book 1968: The Year that Rocked the World, published by Ballantine Books. Carol Brightman talked about her book Total Insecurity: The Myth of American Omnipotence, published by Verso Press. Following their remarks, the authors responded to audience questions.

Mr. Kurlansky talked about the political unrest of 1968. He spoke about widespread student protests in places such as Paris, Mexico City, and the U.S. and discussed the impact of these protests. He noted that the “spontaneous social explosions” of 1968 occurred “in almost every country in the world.”

Ms. Brightman spoke about the lead-up to the U.S. invasion of Iraq. She argued that the Bush Administration misled the American people and failed to prepare for the occupation of Iraq. She asserted that the war has undermined U.S. security interests. close
