The panelists discussed Amtrak and the future of passenger rail service. They noted that Amtrak was created in 1968 by Congress, that it has never made a profit, and that it has cost some $27 billion dollars in federal subsidies. It seems to have a great appeal to members of Congress as a benefit in their individual states. Mr. Vranich, author of End of the Line, believes that Amtrak has failed for many reasons, especially financial, and should be scrapped. Amtrak also has infrastructure and safety problems. Other topics included U.S. demographics and passenger railroads in Canada. After their presentations the panelists answered audience members' questions. close
