Professors and representatives of native American groups discussed the upcoming 1992 quincentennial celebration of Columbus' “discovery” of America. The issue at hand was whether Columbus' arrival on the North American continent should be heralded as a brave exploratory force or the beginning of an invasionary force that committed atrocities upon the native population. Questions were put to the participants in the discussion by attendees of the 1991 International Conference on the Social Studies. close
