President Assad addressed the Syrian Parliament on the situation in Lebanon, the future of Syrian military presence in the country, and plans to pull back the Syrian presence. His remarks were a response to public calls in the streets of Lebanon for Syrian withdrawal and international pressure to remove Syrian security forces from the country. President Assad stopped short of declaring a withdrawal from Lebanon until a consensus had been reached over the future of the Syrian presence. Syria currently has about 14, 000 troops in Lebanon.
