Mr. Bizimungo discussed the current political situation in his country and around his region. In October 1990, Rwanda was invaded by armed bands entering the country from Uganda. Dr. Bizimungo spoke about the results of the conflict and his country’s prospects for the future. Dr. Bizimungo, a former medical doctor, was born in Rwanda, where he also received his undergraduate degree. He continued his education in the United States and has worked since 1989 as the Minister of Foreign Affairs. Dr. Bizimungo claimed that peace was a priority for the Rwandans, who refuse to invade and attack Uganda. His hope is for a peaceful dialogue between the two nations, whereby Rwanda can come to an agreement with neighboring states. Many of Dr. Bizimungo’s comments were directed at American citizens, whom he felt would enjoy the country of Rwanda as a vacation spot. He urged Americans to not be afraid of the current political situation and reassured the audience that the Rwandan political agenda would be established “very shortly.” He answered several questions about his meetings in Washington with Congress and mentioned that he had discussed plans for future actions to bring peace to the region. close
