2004 Gelber Prize winner Steve Coll wrote Ghost Wars: The Secret History of the CIA, Afghanistan, and Bin Laden, from the Soviet Invasion to September 10, 2001. His book was also recently awarded the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for general nonfiction. Other Gelber Prize finalists were Dennis Ross, author of The Missing Peace: The Inside Story of the Fight for Middle East Peace and Anne-Marie Slaughter, author of A New World Order.
