The Senate Judiciary Committee held a hearing on the security of personal electronic data and striking a balance between personal privacy and commercial and governmental use. Witnesses testified about recent data breaches by several information and database management companies, proposed legislation that would requiring consumer notification when their personal information is compromised, and the level of threat to consumer privacy. The first panel consisted of government officials and the second panel of executives from companies from which data had been stolen and other experts in identity theft. close
