Former Senate Minority Leader Bob Dole talked about his book One Soldier’s Story: A Memoir, published by HarperCollins. The book was about his experience joining the Army in 1940's, and becoming a platoon leader at the age of 21. He was stationed with the 10th Mountain Division and was part of an attack on the Nazi army in the Alps of Northern Italy. During the battle he was hit in the upper back by enemy fire, which damaged his spinal cord. He is interviewed on his wartime experience, and his rehabilitation by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author, Rick Atkinson.
Bob Dole served in the U.S. Senate for twenty-seven years and was the Republican Leader for twelve years. He was the Chairman of the Republican National Committee during the Nixon administration, and was the 1976 Republican nominee for vice president for Gerald Ford, and 1996 Republican nominee for president. He was also the Chairman of the National World War II Memorial.
Rick Atkinson is on book leave from The Washington Post, where he most recently served as assistant editor for investigations. Mr. Atkinson’s career in journalism began at The Pittsburgh (Kansas) Morning Sun in 1976 and in 1977, he moved to The Kansas City Times. In 1983, he joined the national staff of The Washington Post. Mr. Atkinson’s books include In the Company of Soldiers: A Chronicle of Combat in Iraq, published by Henry Holt and Company. It is about his experiences traveling with the 101st Airborne Division of the US Army from its deployment out of Fort Campbell, Kentucky through its entry into Baghdad. Mr. Atkinson won the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for An Army at Dawn: The War in Africa, 1942-1943, published by Henry Holt and Company. He is currently working on subsequent volumes in the Liberation Trilogy, a narrative history of the American Army in North Africa, Italy, and Western Europe during World War II. close
