The National Education Goals Panel met in Washington, DC, in one of a continuing series of meetings to discuss the American educational system. The commission was created by President Bush to determine concrete goals for American education to aim for in improving the schooling of American children, along with concrete methods for applying the goals. The panel determined six goals for the improvement of American education, including keeping schools safe from crime and drugs and setting national standards for math and science teaching. In the hearing, the panel discussed their scheme for reporting the progress of American education in an annual report card for American schools. They also discussed proposals for achieving goal two of the panel’s six goals: to increase high school completion rates for all segments of the population. close
