Jim Wright, the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, served as a member of Congress for 34 years. Speaker Wright served with eight American presidents, and he discussed his long career in politics. He also explained the events of the past five years; in particular, his relationship with the Reagan administration and the factors that led to his resignation from office. He explained that despite the flaws of the United States government, it was still “the last best hope on earth.” He responded to questions about recent ethics violations among other members of Congress and offered his opinion of what the standards of Congress ought to be. Many of his comments concerned the recent allegations against Senators Edward Kennedy (D-MA) and Charles Robb (D-VA). close
