The Center for Public Integrity, a non-profit private education foundation, held a press conference to announce the release of a report on the financing of political campaigns by special interest groups in America. Entitled Shortchanged: How Congress and Special Interests Benefit At the Expense of the American People, the report examined Federal election records to examine the influence of special interest groups on Congressional campaigns. The Center for Public Integrity found a number of cases in which money appeared to be a direct factor in the voting of members of Congress, including many members who switched their votes as a result of pressure from special interest groups. Mr. Lewis discussed several instances where legislators voted along the lines drawn by large benefactors to their campaigns, including the Federal sugar price support program and vehicle efficiency standards. close
