PEN American Center’s second “State of Emergency: Unconventional Readings” event called “Readings Against Torture, Arbitrary Detention and Extraordinary Rendition” was presented in opposition to current United States policies on the treatment of detainees in this country and abroad. Authors read selections from such writers as Federico Garcia Lorca, George Oppen, Eduardo Galeano, Jeanette Belmar, Diana Ortiz, Raul Zurita, Abraham Lincoln, Donald Barthelme, Jean Amery, Curzio Malaparte, Ariel Dorfman, Juan Goytisolo, Carolyn Forche, Jose Saramago, and Michael Herr. Salman Rushdie introduced the event.

PEN is an association of poets, playwrights, essayists, editors, and novelists that was founded in 1921. close
