Stanley Weintraub talked about his book Iron Tears: America’s Battle for Freedom, Britain’s Quagmire: 1775-1783, published by Free Press. For generations, Americans have viewed the Revolutionary War as a heroic tale of resistance, exclusively from the perspective of the Continental Army and the Founding Fathers. Mr. Weintraub examines the war from three vantage points: the battlefields, the American leadership under George Washington, and that of England, embroiled in controversy over the war. The author questions whether America in fact won the battle for its freedom or if Britain’s internal division over the war played a more crucial role. He responded to questions from members of the audience. close
