Parliamentary leaders outlined Lebanon’s political situation in opening day speeches. The new Parliament met for the first time since Parliamentary elections in May and June following the assassination of the former prime minister in February, and Syria’s troop withdrawal in April. There were speeches by the Speaker Pro Tempore (a member of the anti-Syrian alliance that won a majority in Parliament) and from Speaker Nabih Berri (considered pro-Hezbollah and pro-Syrian).
