Husain Haqqani talked about his book Pakistan: Between Mosque and Military, published by Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. The relationship between Pakistan’s military and Islamic groups in the country is one that complicates the relationship between the United States and Pakistan. The author examined how Pakistan has been torn between being an Islamic state and hub for radical Islamic activity while also sharing intelligence with the U.S. intelligence community in the global efforts to combat terrorism. The author contended that part of this struggle with identity stems from the long-standing close ties between the Pakistani military and Islamic groups. Ambassador Haqqani discussed these issues with Ambassador Oakley and Steve Coll. Following their presentation, the panelists responded to questions and comments from members of the audience.
