At the World War II Memorial on the National Mall, The Department of Defense commemorated the 60-year anniversary of the Japanese surrender to end World War II. All military services and the Merchant Marines were represented and honored as Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld hosted the event. Former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and WWII veteran, Gen. John Vessey, shared his thoughts on the “greatest generation.”

The ceremony included the placing of wreaths, the playing of Taps, a parade of flags representing allies and former adversaries during WWII, and a presentation of colors with the national anthem and invocation. The United States Navy Band and the Sea Chanters provide musical interludes. close
