Amnesty International USA sponsored a news conference to announce the release of a report on the condition of political prisoners in 141 countries around the world. The report found that despite lip service to the contrary, in many countries political prisoners were receiving worse treatment at the hands of their jailers and political dissidents were being persecuted to a greater degree than in previous years. Speakers at the news conference extolled the goals of Amnesty International, an organization dedicated to appealing to political leaders around the world for the release of political prisoners on the grounds of basic human rights. Rep. Holmes-Norton criticized the extension of unconditional most favored nation status for China, and Mr. Healey named a number of countries currently holding political prisoners, including China, Kuwait, and Great Britain. close
