Mr. Smith talked about “Exposing the Mayor: Ethical Case Studies from the Spokesman-Review Investigative Series.” He discussed three of the most significant ethical dilemmas confronted by the newspaper while investigating Spokane (WA) Mayor James West, including the decision to hire a forensic computer specialist to confirm the mayor’s online activity. Following his presentation, he responded to questions and comments from members of the audience.

The articles alleged that Spokane, Wash. Mayor James West had molested young boys while serving as a Boy Scout leader and sheriff’s deputy nearly 30 years ago. They also claimed that, while mayor, he had cruised gay Web sites seeking sex with young men while offering them goods, services, and jobs at city hall. He was also accused, as a legislator, of fighting for gay rights initiatives while leading a secret gay life.

This workshop took place at the 2005 Society of Professional Journalists Convention and National Journalism Conference at the Aladdin Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. close
