James C. Cobb and Larry T. McGehee participated in a panel titled “America’s Middle Child: An Examination of Southern Identity.” The authors individually spoke about the history of the Southern identity, the role of the American Civil War on society in the South, and racial identity in Southern culture. Following the authors' remarks, Mr. Bishop moderated a question and answer segment. Among the topics the authors addressed were stereotypes and Appalachia’s isolation as a region within a region.

James C. Cobb’s book Away Down South: A History of Southern Identity, published by Oxford University Press, examines the history, literature and popular culture of the Southern region. Larry T. McGehee’s book Southern Seen: Meditations on Past and Present, published by University of Tennessee Press, is a collection of essays on the Southern United States. close
