Ms. Weidman was interviewed about the microfilm archiving of Civil War files to make them more available for researchers. She discussed the completion of a project that archived letters from U.S. colored troops. Ms. Weidman talked about and read a letter from a runaway slave named Samuel Cable to his wife. The author became a private in the 55th Massachusetts regiment, the sister regiment of the 54th regiment that was the subject of the movie Glory. His former owner in Missouri kept the letter in order to request compensation from the government. close
