Scientific authors participated in a panel discussion on scientists. Among the topics they discussed were measuring the size of the galaxy; the work and life of scientist Kurt Godel; and the homosexuality of Alan Turing and his suicide, which involved biting an apple dipped in cyanide. Mr. Leavitt was interrupted during his remarks due to a constraint in time. The scheduled question and answer segment was cancelled.

The panelists were Alan Lightman, author of The Discoveries: Great Breakthroughs in 20th-century Science, Including the Original Papers; Rebecca Goldstein, author of Incompleteness: The Proof and Paradox of Kurt Godel; David Leavitt, author of The Man Who Knew Too Much: Alan Turing and the Invention of the Computer. Mr. Atlas, founding editor of Lipper/Viking Penguin Lives Series and a longtime contributor to The New Yorker, moderated the panel. close
