Mr. Meacham interviewed George Weigel about his book God’s Choice: Pope Benedict XVI and the Future of the Catholic Church, published by HarperCollins. In the book, this biographer of Pope John Paul II chronicles the transition between John Paul’s papacy and that of his successor, Pope Benedict XVI, in this blend of history, biography, analysis and forecasting. He reviewed the political and social issues that face the global agenda of the Vatican: including its growing populations in Africa, Latin America and parts of the post-communist world, its struggles in western Europe and Asia and the scandals it has faced in the United States.
George Weigel, a Roman Catholic theologian, is a senior fellow of the Ethics and Public Policy Center and the director of the Catholic Studies program at EPPC. His book include Witness to Hope: The Biography of Pope John Paul II, published by Cliff Street Books, and The Cube and the Cathedral: Europe, America, and Politics Without God, published by Basic Books.
Jon Meacham has written cover stories on religious issues and the Catholic Church sexual abuse scandal for Newsweek. close
