Barry Rubin talked about his book The Long War for Freedom: The Arab Struggle for Democracy in the Middle East, published by Wiley. He argued that radical dictators in the Middle East, even though they govern badly, have been able to survive largely because they effectively use repression and anti-American/anti-Israel propaganda to garner support from their populations. He said that the transformation from dictatorship to democracy in these countries will require a large internal effort from democratic forces and that external pressure will have only marginal effects. He used Iran, where, he said, a large part of the population has become fed-up with decades radical Islamic rule, as an example of a country ripe for change. Following his presentation, the author responded to questions and comments from members of the audience. close
