A group of House Democrats held a news conference to announce the election of Rep. David Bonior of Michigan to the position of House Majority Whip. Rep. Bonior was chief deputy whip for four years, and will replace Rep. William Gray who resigned his House position to become president of the United Negro College Fund. He beat Rep. Steny Hoyer for the position in a vote of 160-109, taken by the Democratic caucus. In accepting the position, Rep. Bonior assailed the Bush administration for failing to deal in a meaningful way with the effects of the recession and a lack of policies on health care, unemployment and U.S. children. Rep. O’Neill, Speaker of the House, said the party was stronger for the experience of the contested race for majority whip. Rep. Bonior responded to questions on his election to the position. close
