The Lincoln Forum symposium meets annually near the November 19th anniversary of the Gettysburg address to hear from authors and scholars on the 16th president. The most recent meeting was devoted to studying the assassination of President Lincoln.

Lincoln Forum Chair Frank Williams and Edwards Steers, a member of the advisory committee for the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission, were speakers at the Lincoln Forum. After their recorded presentations were shown they discussed the assassination and trial. State Supreme Court Justice Williams is a member of the Defense Department’s Military Commission Review Panel established to review the proceedings against those detained in efforts to combat terrorism. He discussed the history of military tribunals and compared them to current tribunals. They responded to telephone calls and electronic mail.

The program included archival photographs and video footage of various scenes including the Dr. Samuel Mudd House Museum in Waldorf, Maryland, where John Wilkes Booth slept on April 15, 1865 after receiving treatment for his broken leg. Brief video clips were also shown of the homes of sympathizers to the assassin’s cause and the Garrett Farmhouse in Fort A.P. Hill on Virginia Route 301, the site of the death of John Wilkes Booth.
