A memorial service for Eugene J. McCarthy was held at the National Cathedral. Senator McCarthy, a former Democratic presidential candidate who campaigned against then President Lyndon B. Johnson on an anti-Vietnam War platform, died December 10, 2005, in Georgetown at the age of 89. He served Minnesota as a representative from 1949-1959 and as senator from 1959-1971.
