During an introduction by Brigadier General Taylor he unveiled a bust of the young First Lieutenant George W. Bush who was a member of the Texas National Guard. The bust was presented by the Texas National Guard Association. In his speech President Bush said that international cooperation had helped thwart a terrorist attack in 2002 in which plotters planned to use airplanes to strike the West Coast. Other topics included his war on terror, the role of National Guard units in the Hurricane Katrina aftermath, military action in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the increased budget for the Defense Department. He expressed appreciation to all National Guard members for their sacrifices. close
