Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz talked about her book Blood on the Border: A Memoir of the Contra War, published by South End Press. In this, the third volume of her memoirs, the author recounts the Contra War in Nicaragua. She spent months at a time in Central America throughout the 1980s and witnessed the effect in several regions of civilian casualties due to CIA-trained contra soldiers. Ms. Dunbar-Ortiz argued that the war on terrorism began long before the September 11, 2001 attacks and compares the foreign policy of Ronald Reagan to the present administration. Professor Dunbar-Ortiz read passages from her memoirs, talked about the history of the region, and answered questions from members of the audience.
Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz, historian and activist, has written on Native American history in the U.S. and Nicaragua. Her talk, “Sandinistas, Miskito Indians, and the Contra War: A Case Study in the History of Nationalism, Indigeneism, and U.S. Imperialism in Latin America” was sponsored by the Tenneco Lecture series in conjunction with the History Department and the Latin American Studies Program. close
