James McManus was interviewed about his book Physical: An American Checkup. The experience of taking an executive physical at the Mayo Clinic prompted McManus, the poker columnist for the New York Times, to explore the state of health care in the U.S. He also discussed the debate over stem cell research and how the outcome could affect his daughter’s struggle with juvenile diabetes.
He was interviewed in a studio in Miami, Florida by T.R. Reid, using remote video link from the Washington, DC studio. T.R. Reid currently is working on a book about health care systems around the world.
Mr. McManus also is the author of Positively Fifth Street: Murderers, Cheetahs, and Binion’s World Series of Poker, published by Farrar Straus and Giroux. close
