Tom Nagorski talked about his book Miracles on the Water: The Heroic Survivors of a World War II U-Boat Attack, published by Hyperion. The S.S. City of Benares, with 406 crew and passengers aboard, was 630 miles out in the North Atlantic on September 17, 1940, when a German U-boat torpedoed it. Mr. Nagorski, whose great-uncle was among the survivors, based his narrative largely on eyewitness accounts of the survivors, most of whom were children who were venturing to other countries for a better life during wartime. He responded to questions from members of the audience. close
